Motorola E5+ Launched

The 2018 launch of the Motorola Moto E5 Plus marked a significant milestone for Lenovo-owned Motorola, consolidating its focus on the burgeoning budget segment where India accounted for the biggest share of sales. The E5 Plus, alongside its sibling the Moto E5, emphasized a combination of massive battery life and practical design features, establishing a successful formula that continues to define Motorola’s entry-level strategy today.

Original Battery Champion-Moto E5 Plus (2018)

The Moto E5 Plus was strategically built around its endurance. The core feature promoted with great fanfare was its gargantuan 5000mAh non-removable battery, which Motorola claimed could deliver up to 18 hours of video playback or over 200 hours of music. To mitigate the charging time for such a large cell, it included a 10W fast-charger in the box. On the hardware front, the E5 Plus offered respectable specifications for its time and price point-

A 12-megapixel primary rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera for selfies. The rear camera often featured Laser Autofocus, a premium addition for a budget phone.

Software & Design

It ran on a near-stock Android 8.0 Oreo and integrated signature Moto features like Moto Display (for at-a-glance notifications) and Moto Actions (gesture controls). The device also boasted a splash-resistant nano-coating for durability.

While the Moto E5 Plus laid the foundation, the budget smartphone landscape has transformed radically since 2018. The current generation of the Moto E-series, and budget phones in general, showcase how essential features have evolved.

Network Connectivity

The Moto E5 Plus was designed to be a highly functional and durable device that could keep users connected and entertained for extended periods, thanks to its massive battery and full suite of connectivity features typical of a modern budget smartphone in 2018.

Massive 5000mAh Battery

This high-capacity non-removable battery was the core of the phone’s identity, promising longevity that few competitors could match.

Endurance Claims

Moto sources confidently claimed the device could deliver up to 18 hours of video playback and over 200 hours of music playback, highlighting its suitability for media consumers and heavy users.

Charging

To support this large battery, the Moto E5 Plus included a 10W fast-charger in the box, helping to reduce the overall time needed for a full recharge.

Connectivity and Sensors

The Moto E5 Plus offered essential connectivity and sensor capabilities, ensuring it was a versatile tool for communication and navigation-

Network Compatibility

It supported 3G and 4G networks, providing modern data speeds for browsing and media streaming.

Dual SIM

The phone came equipped with dual SIM (GSM and GSM) capability, accepting two Nano-SIM cards. This was, and remains, a critical feature in markets like India, allowing users to manage personal and professional numbers simultaneously or optimize for different carrier plans.

Wireless Connectivity

Standard wireless options included Wi-Fi, GPS for navigation, Bluetooth for connecting accessories, and an FM radio for offline entertainment.

Motorola History

Established as Motorola, Inc way back in 1928 in USA, the company did split into two, Motorola Solutions, its enterprise segment, later on acquired by Google and then Motorola Mobility was sold to Lenovo in 2014. First time, Motorola brought an Android smartphone in 2009 and an Android tablet in 2011.

Today’s Motorola E5+ and entry-level Moto G devices (often occupying the former E-series price point) continue the legacy of great battery life, frequently featuring 5000mAh or 6000mAh batteries, but they now add 5G connectivity, higher resolution primary cameras (often 50MP), and faster 120Hz displays. This demonstrates Motorola’s commitment to injecting high-end features, such as 5G and high-refresh-rate screens, into their most affordable segments, ensuring the “budget workhorse” remains competitive in the modern mobile era.
