The world is celebrating International Yoga day on June 21. UN has accepted that June 21 will be celebrated as International Yoga day every year. It is today being celebrated in as many as 190 countries. Millions of people from east and west are running after yoga, but why? Do you know what is that? Where it was started? Why it is so popular these days? What are its benefits?
The term “Yoga” is taken from Sanskrit literature “Yoke”, meaning union. It is a tool to create a union between the body and mind. It is an ancient Indian way of life to enhance personal growth and well-being. It was invented 5000 years ago in India.
In ancient India, sages and monks used to go into deep silence in a particular posture for years with the goal of creating an illness-free strong body.
The original intention is to bring body and mind together in achieving inner peace. It is actually a series of exercises that can be practiced by almost all of us starting from senior citizens, disabled to young children to stay healthy and tension-free.
The process of yoga consists of all forms of human life namely physical, psychological and spiritual. It can be regarded as the perfect example of holistic health due to the combination of body and mind, both are co-related. One cannot stay healthy and fit without the other.
By repairing the body, we can repair the mind. If you feel pain in any part of your body, you would find it difficult to relax and be happy. It is composed of a series of physical postures and a philosophy that brings peace and happiness. It is not all about acrobatic postures.
The sole purpose of yoga is the realization of one’s inner self. The physical aspect of this utilizes poses and focused breathing, concentration and discipline.
The result will be the greater union of body, mind, and spirit. The foundation of traditional yoga is the careful alignment of your body as you sit in different postures during the session.
These postures bring an enormous amount of awareness to your body, brain, and nerve system so that it amounts to tremendous physical and mental growth.
Yoga promotes flexibility and strength along with cardiovascular health. It gives mental clarity and emotional balance. If it is performed properly, in combination with proper related breathing techniques, this will stimulate the circulatory system, the digestive process as well as the nervous and endocrine system.
One hour of yoga sessions can make you feel energized and relaxed. This is perhaps the only form of activity that massages all the internal glands and organs of the body thoroughly including those – such as the prostate – that hardly get externally stimulated. This stimulation and massage of the organs in a wholesome manner keeps us away from disease and disorder.
